Road House
September 28, 2006So I had never seen the epic 1989 Patrick Swayze bouncer odyssey Road House before. In fact it had never even occurred to me to so much glance at the DVD case at the video store as I walked by it looking for a copy of Sin City or whatever. I have learned the error of my ways.
For those of you who remember it, the show Mystery Science Theater 3000 is a touchstone, and Michael J. Nelson was it’s star, head writer, and co-creator. Since the show ended in 1999, Mike Nelson has been writing books, appearing on DVD commentary tracks, and doing other generally very funny stuff. His new venture is is RiffTrax, a service where he provides MST3K-like audio-tracks making fun of big budget Hollywood movies, to be played in conjunction with a DVD. It sounds like it would be a difficult idea to make work, but it was awesome. And it only cost two bucks.
Road House, plus Mike Nelson’s commentary, was a blast. RiffTrax has lots of other less-than-stellar Hollywood movies available, form Star Trek V to Crossroads, the Brittney Spears movie. Of course you have to actually be able to rent Crossroads without being to embarrassed to bring it to the counter, but that’s your problem.
(This concludes my advertisement for RiffTrax. Mike, I’m waiting for my check.)
